When To Go

November to April

From November to April, the Maldives experience the dry northeast monsoon season. This is the most popular time for visitors, characterized by clear skies, abundant sunshine, and calm seas. Temperatures during this period range from 27°C to 31°C, providing perfect conditions for beach relaxation, snorkeling, and diving. The underwater visibility is at its peak, allowing travelers to explore the vibrant marine life and coral reefs. Rainfall is minimal, though occasional light showers may occur in November and December. This period is ideal for travelers looking for a quintessential tropical escape with uninterrupted sunny days and warm, tranquil waters.

May to October

May to October marks the wet southwest monsoon season. Rainfall increases significantly, with May and October often experiencing the heaviest downpours, averaging up to 200mm to 300mm per month. Showers tend to be brief but can be intense, and overcast skies are more frequent. Despite the rain, temperatures remain warm, ranging from 26°C to 30°C, and sunny intervals are common. This period also brings stronger winds and rougher seas, creating excellent conditions for surfing. The reduced crowds during this off-peak season make it appealing for travelers seeking more privacy and budget-friendly options. Marine life remains vibrant, although visibility underwater may be slightly reduced due to stirred sediments.

Summary Recommendations:

The best overall period to visit the Maldives near Malé is from November to April, offering dry weather, calm seas, and exceptional conditions for diving and snorkeling. For surfing enthusiasts and those seeking quieter islands, May to October is a suitable alternative, with the bonus of lower costs and lush, rejuvenated scenery despite the rainy conditions. November and early December provide a sweet spot for travelers looking to enjoy good weather before the peak season crowds arrive.
