When To Go

December to April

This period corresponds to Costa Rica’s dry season, known locally as the verano or summer. It is the most popular time for travelers, offering consistent sunshine, minimal rainfall, and warm temperatures ranging between 25°C and 34°C, depending on the region. The Pacific Coast, including destinations like Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio, experiences the driest conditions, making it ideal for beach lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Inland areas such as Arenal and Monteverde remain dry but cooler due to their elevation, with lush greenery beginning to fade slightly as the season progresses. The Caribbean Coast, while also drier during this time, may still see occasional rains due to its unique microclimate. Activities like zip-lining, hiking, and wildlife viewing are at their peak, as the dry weather ensures easy access to trails and clear skies for birdwatching.

May to August

Marking the start of the green season, this period brings occasional afternoon showers but retains plenty of sunshine, particularly in the mornings. Rainfall rejuvenates the landscapes, bringing a burst of vibrant greenery that Costa Rica is famous for. Temperatures range from 24°C to 32°C, with higher humidity levels compared to the dry season. The Pacific Coast and Central Valley generally see less rain than the Caribbean during this time, making it a great option for those who want to avoid peak-season crowds while still enjoying good weather. Sea conditions are calmer in May and early June, offering excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving. As the season progresses into July and August, a mini-dry season known as veranillo de San Juan may occur, especially in the Guanacaste region, offering a short reprieve from rain.

September to October

These months represent the height of the rainy season, particularly on the Pacific Coast and in the Central Valley, with heavy, prolonged rains becoming more frequent. Average temperatures remain warm, ranging from 23°C to 31°C, but the high humidity and saturated ground make some outdoor activities, like hiking, more challenging. Despite this, the Caribbean Coast experiences its driest period during these months, making destinations such as Puerto Viejo, Tortuguero, and Cahuita ideal for travelers. With calm seas and sunny days, the Caribbean is perfect for water-based activities like diving, snorkeling, and turtle watching, as this season coincides with sea turtle nesting along the coast.

November

November is a transitional month, as the rainy season begins to taper off and the dry season approaches. Rainfall decreases significantly across the country, and sunny days become more frequent, though afternoon showers may still occur. Temperatures range between 24°C and 33°C, with humidity levels gradually dropping. The Pacific Coast and Central Valley experience improving weather, while the Caribbean Coast continues to enjoy the tail end of its drier spell. This month offers a quieter travel experience before the peak tourist season begins in December, making it an excellent choice for those seeking both affordability and enjoyable weather.

Summary Recommendations

Best Overall Period: December to April
The dry season offers the most reliable weather, with plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures, and minimal rainfall. It's perfect for beach activities, exploring rainforests, and taking advantage of Costa Rica’s many adventure activities.

Alternative: May to August
The green season provides lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and more affordable accommodations. Mornings are often sunny, and afternoon rains are usually brief. This is an excellent time for nature lovers and budget-conscious travelers.

Avoid if Possible: September to October
While the Caribbean Coast remains a highlight during these months, much of Costa Rica experiences heavy rains, making it less suitable for outdoor activities, especially in the Pacific and Central regions. Roads and trails may become muddy and challenging to navigate. However, those drawn to the vibrant rainforest scenery and turtle nesting season may still find this period rewarding.
