When To Go
June to September
This is the best season for trekking in the Kazbegi and Juta regions, with warm, sunny days and clear skies. Temperatures range from 15–25°C in the valleys, while higher altitudes are cooler. The trails are fully open, wildflowers blanket the alpine meadows, and the mountain views are at their most spectacular. The long daylight hours make this period perfect for extended hikes, allowing travelers to explore multiple trails. Summer is also the most popular time for visitors, so advance booking for accommodations is highly recommended.
October
October marks the beginning of autumn, offering a magical landscape of golden foliage and cooler, crisp air. Temperatures drop to a comfortable 10–20°C, and the region becomes quieter as the summer crowds thin out. Trekking trails are still accessible, making this an ideal time to enjoy serene hikes through valleys and forests painted in shades of red, orange, and gold. Nights can be chilly, so warm layers are essential.
November to March
The region transforms into a winter wonderland, with snow-capped peaks and frozen trails. Temperatures range from -5°C to 5°C, and winter treks or snowshoeing can be done by adventurous travelers equipped with proper gear. Accommodation in mountain areas like Juta may be limited, and transportation can become challenging due to snow. This period is more suited for those seeking solitude, snow sports, or winter photography.
April to May
Spring in Kazbegi and Juta is a transitional period, with melting snow revealing the first signs of greenery. Temperatures range from 10–20°C, but trails can be muddy and slippery due to the thaw. Some higher-altitude treks may still be inaccessible, and river crossings can be challenging. While the scenery begins to bloom, April and early May are considered less ideal for trekking but are great for photography and short, lower-elevation hikes.
Summary Recommendations:
The best time to visit Kazbegi and Juta is from June to September, when the weather is warm, the trails are clear, and the landscapes are vibrant with wildflowers and lush greenery. This period is perfect for hikers and nature enthusiasts looking for optimal conditions and stunning views.
For those who prefer cooler weather and quieter trails, late September to October is an excellent choice. The golden hues of autumn foliage add a special charm to the region, and the crisp air makes trekking enjoyable without the summer crowds.
April to early May is best avoided for trekking enthusiasts due to the muddy, thawing trails and unpredictable conditions. Similarly, the deep winter months (December to February) may pose challenges for most travelers unless you’re specifically prepared for snow trekking or winter activities.

The hike itself is relatively short but moderately challenging, rewarding you with stunning vistas along the way.

A short drive from Stepantsminda brings you to the mountain village of Juta, nestled at 2,200 meters and often referred to as one of the most picturesque spots in the Caucasus. From here, set off on a trek toward the Chaukhi Massif, a dramatic collection of jagged peaks known as the “Georgian Dolomites.” Along the trail, stop at the Fifth Season Hut, a cozy mountain café, for a break or a light meal.
The scenery of alpine meadows, towering peaks, and rushing streams makes this trek a highlight of the trip. Spend the night in Juta, either at a local guesthouse or a mountain hut like Zeta Camp, where the views of the surrounding landscape are equally mesmerizing.

With wildflowers in the summer and a peaceful ambiance year-round, this is a wonderful opportunity to relax and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the mountains.
