When To Go
November to March
This period marks the rainy season for Antananarivo and the eastern coast, including Toamasina. It is characterized by warm, humid conditions, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in January and February, averaging 300-350mm per month. The lush green landscapes are at their peak during these months, but travel can be challenging due to muddy roads and frequent downpours. Temperatures in Antananarivo range from 18°C to 26°C, while the coastal region is warmer, averaging 23°C to 30°C. Although not ideal for beach activities, this season offers a vibrant atmosphere for those interested in the region’s flora and fauna.
April to June
This transition period marks the end of the rainy season, with gradually decreasing rainfall and cooler temperatures. In Antananarivo, the weather becomes more pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 14°C to 24°C, while the coast remains slightly warmer. Rainfall reduces significantly, making it a good time for exploring the capital and enjoying cultural activities. The coastal areas around Toamasina experience calmer seas, making this a suitable time for beach outings and coastal hikes. The landscapes remain lush from the preceding rains.
July to September
The dry season dominates this period, bringing cooler and drier weather to Antananarivo and the surrounding highlands. Temperatures in the capital range from 10°C to 22°C, making it an excellent time for hiking and exploring the city's markets and historical sites. On the coast, Toamasina enjoys milder conditions with temperatures between 18°C and 27°C, and rainfall is minimal, averaging 30-50mm per month. The seas are calm, ideal for boating and fishing, and the reduced humidity makes outdoor activities more enjoyable. Wildlife enthusiasts can also take advantage of this season to visit nearby reserves.
October to November
This is a second transition period, as the dry season gives way to the rainy season. In Antananarivo, temperatures begin to rise, ranging from 15°C to 26°C, and occasional showers start to appear. On the coast, rainfall increases slightly, especially in November, with temperatures between 22°C and 29°C. This period is ideal for birdwatching, as migratory species are abundant, and the landscapes are vibrant but not yet heavily affected by rain. It’s also a good time to explore beaches and enjoy less crowded attractions before the peak rainy season sets in.
Summary Recommendations
Best Overall Period: July to September
Cool, dry weather with minimal rainfall makes this period ideal for exploring Antananarivo's markets, historical sites, and nearby nature reserves. On the coast, calm seas and mild temperatures are perfect for beach outings, fishing, and coastal hikes. Reduced humidity and sunny days enhance outdoor activities.
Alternative: April to June
The end of the rainy season brings lush landscapes, moderate temperatures, and decreasing rainfall. This is an excellent time to enjoy cultural activities in Antananarivo and beach activities in Toamasina, as the seas are calmer and the scenery remains vibrant.
Avoid if Possible: January to February
These months experience the heaviest rainfall, particularly on the coast, with high humidity and muddy conditions in Antananarivo. While the landscapes are at their greenest, travel can be challenging, and some outdoor activities may be limited due to frequent downpours.
