When To Go

January to April

This period offers mild temperatures ranging from 18°C to 22°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring Lanzarote's volcanic landscapes and Fuerteventura's sand dunes. The days are mostly sunny, but occasional breezes can make it feel cooler, especially in the evenings. Beaches are less crowded, providing a peaceful atmosphere for long walks along the coast. It’s a perfect time for travelers looking for a quieter experience with clear skies and comfortable weather for both sightseeing and adventure.

May to August

Summer brings warmer temperatures, typically between 25°C and 28°C, and longer days filled with sunshine. This is a fantastic time for beach enthusiasts, as the waters are at their most inviting. However, the trade winds are stronger during this period, especially in Fuerteventura, which is a hotspot for windsurfing and kiteboarding. Inland areas can feel quite hot, so early mornings or late afternoons are the best times for hiking. While it’s the high season for tourists, Fuerteventura’s wide beaches and Lanzarote’s rugged landscapes still offer plenty of space for exploration.

September to November

These months provide a sweet spot for visitors, with pleasant temperatures ranging from 23°C to 26°C and calmer winds compared to the summer. The landscapes, refreshed by the summer heat, display vibrant colors, and the beaches are less crowded than in peak season. This is an excellent time for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy hiking, snorkeling, and cycling without the intense summer heat. It’s also a quieter period, making it ideal for travelers seeking tranquility and better deals on accommodations and activities.

December

Winter begins with cooler but comfortable temperatures, averaging 18°C to 21°C. This is a peaceful time to visit, as the islands see fewer tourists compared to the rest of the year. The crisp, clear air and sunny days make it perfect for exploring without the risk of overheating. Beaches may be less appealing for swimming due to cooler water temperatures, but they remain stunning for walks and picnics. It’s also a great season for stargazing, as the skies are typically very clear during this time.

Summary Recommendations:

Best Overall Period: September to November
Mild weather, fewer tourists, and perfect conditions for hiking and snorkeling make this an excellent choice.

Alternative: January to April
Enjoy serene volcanic landscapes and mild weather, ideal for adventurers seeking solitude.

Avoid if Possible: May to August
While sunny, stronger winds and higher temperatures can make outdoor activities less comfortable.

Our Proposal

DAY 1

Fly into Arrecife, Lanzarote’s capital city, and pick up a rental car to begin your adventure. Having your own vehicle is essential for exploring the island’s unique landscapes at your own pace. For your first night, consider staying in a guesthouse near El Golfo, a charming coastal village known for its tranquil atmosphere and dramatic volcanic scenery.

After checking in, take a short drive to Charco de los Clicos, also called the Green Lagoon. This natural wonder is a bright green lake formed in a volcanic crater, its color caused by algae thriving in its saline waters. Surrounding it is a striking contrast of black volcanic sand and the deep blue Atlantic Ocean—a photographer’s dream.

As the day winds down, head to Los Hervideros, a rugged coastal area where lava once met the sea, forming caves and natural blowholes. As waves crash against the rocks, the spray erupts dramatically through the holes, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The site is especially breathtaking during sunset, as the golden light reflects off the volcanic cliffs and turbulent waters.

DAY 2

Today, immerse yourself in the otherworldly landscapes of Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote’s crown jewel. Start your day early to beat the crowds, and begin with the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains), a dramatic expanse of volcanic peaks and lava fields. Opt for a guided coach tour to access restricted areas, where you’ll see vast lava flows, craters, and multicolored rocks. Guides also perform fascinating geothermic demonstrations—witness dry brush ignite spontaneously in a hot vent or water turn to steam in seconds when poured into the ground.

For a unique experience, consider a camel ride across the rugged terrain. While it may seem touristy, it’s a fun way to connect with Lanzarote’s history, as camels were traditionally used for agriculture and transportation on the island.

End your visit with lunch at El Diablo Restaurant, located within the park. The restaurant uses the heat from volcanic vents to cook its food, offering a truly memorable meal. Spend your afternoon driving through the Lanzarote Wine Region, where the unique method of growing grapes in volcanic ash is worth seeing. Stop by a local bodega in La Geria for a tasting of Malvasia wine before returning to your accommodation.

DAY 3

Begin your exploration of northern Lanzarote at Jameos del Agua, an extraordinary fusion of natural beauty and artistic design by the island’s famed architect César Manrique. This volcanic cave system features a serene underground lake, lush gardens, and even a concert hall, blending nature and art seamlessly.

Next, visit Cueva de los Verdes, an expansive lava tunnel formed during ancient eruptions. The guided tour takes you through the cavern’s dramatic chambers, where clever lighting highlights the textures and formations. Learn about the tunnel's fascinating history, including its use as a hiding place for locals during pirate attacks.

In the afternoon, drive to Mirador del Río, a spectacular viewpoint perched atop a cliff. From here, take in panoramic views of the nearby island of La Graciosa and the turquoise waters of the Atlantic. Enjoy a coffee or light snack at the café, designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Spend the night in an eco-lodge or traditional finca, where you can relax amidst Lanzarote’s natural beauty.

DAY 4

Start the day with a ferry ride from Órzola to La Graciosa, a small, car-free island known for its pristine beaches and unspoiled charm. Rent a bike or explore on foot to fully appreciate the island’s tranquility.

Visit Playa de las Conchas, a stunning beach with golden sands and crystal-clear waters, perfect for a peaceful picnic or a refreshing swim. For the adventurous, hike to Montaña Bermeja, a small volcano that offers sweeping views of the island and Lanzarote in the distance.

If you’re interested in marine life, consider snorkeling in the surrounding waters, part of a protected marine reserve. The underwater world here is teeming with vibrant fish and other sea creatures. Return to Lanzarote by evening, reflecting on the untouched beauty of La Graciosa.

LA GRACIOSA DAY TRIP

DAY 5

Catch an early ferry to Fuerteventura, Lanzarote’s larger, wilder neighbor. Upon arrival, drive to Betancuria, the island’s historic capital. This picturesque village is known for its charming whitewashed buildings, cobblestone streets, and a peaceful atmosphere. Visit the Church of Santa María and stop by the small museum to learn about the island’s history.

In the afternoon, head to Playa de Ajuy, a black-sand beach famous for its impressive sea caves. Take the short hike along the cliffs to see the caves up close, marveling at the contrast between the volcanic rock and the blue ocean. Stay overnight near Corralejo, a lively town with plenty of dining options and a laid-back vibe.

In the afternoon, drive to Calderón Hondo, one of Fuerteventura’s best-preserved volcanoes. The hike to the summit is relatively easy and rewards you with panoramic views of the island and Lanzarote in the distance. Along the way, keep an eye out for local wildlife, including curious squirrels that are often seen in the area.
